Desert Heat Hiking Tips

The Arizona summer heat is here, so be prepared before your go hiking. The following are a few tips.

Check the weather for rain and high temperatures. Getting caught in a flash flood can ruin your whole life.

Bring plenty of water and a water filter. Of course there needs to be a water source to filter. Packing a bandana to use as a prefilter will help filter even the nastiest water.

Bring a map and identify any springs/water sources before you go.

Bring a cell phone (even though it more than likely will not work).

Let someone know where you are going and when to expect your return.

Hike locally in the heat to acclimate to the desert temperatures.

Watch out for Rattlesnakes.

Eat and drink plenty of food and water while you hike.

Apply sunscreen frequently.
